Worldcom London outage

Featured Replies

Got to work this morning only to find the internet slow and sluggish. Checked the ISP router and the reason was immediatly obvious, we were running on the backup link which runs at a stonking 64kbps as oppossed to our normal 1.5mbps.

Spoke to Worldcom who said they had a major outage in london affecting one of their gateways and it should all be fixed in an hour or so. Meanwhile things got slower and slower as the 300 users arrived for work, so now the connection has to deal with all the email, web browsing and other apps the users have installed including the BBC news ticker.

At the end of the day, the problem was still not fixed as Worldcom have had to order some parts to fix the gateway and the email backlog was now 150MB outgoing, I have no idea how much was queueing to come in.

Your would have thought they would have a spare or a backup gateway. It sure was quiet and boring without the internet, I gave up trying to get anything as webpages were taking 5 mins to load due to the saturation of the connection via the emails.

Sounds like a day to have off :)

We have similar problems with out internet at times, it all route back down to london through the server there and out into the big wide world, and if there is a problem all hell breaks lose, but we then have to start work LOL.

Hopefully it will be fixed for you by monday :)
