Scout - MOT advisory - advice please

Featured Replies

Hi, looking at adding a Scout to the Skoda stable.

I have called the seller and asked about advisories at the last MOT which was Jan 14.

There were three: wearing front bushes, not yet affecting their performance, and 'oil mist on rear shocks'. There is also some brake disc wear. Car has just done over 60k miles.

Any ideas please guys? Is this likely to be an expensive future problem?

Clearly the car passed that MOT as these are advisories only. I'm guessing the rear 'oil mist' issue may relate to the rear drive gubbins?

I would strongly advise checking the rear drive unit with the car on a lift to see where the oil is coming from. When my car's rear drive unit failed 2 weeks ago, the only external sign was oil over the nearside lower wishbone and shock absorber. The oil had come from the breather hole on top of the diff. And yes, it can be a very expensive problem to fix.

If the oil is on the rear shocks, its more likely the seals weeping. Not a serious issue and not that expensive to sort.

Brake disk wear is one of those standard ones you almost always can get, especially from a main dealer.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

I called the dealer back to ensure I had all the details correctly recorded.

It is not the rear at all. The advisories are as follows:

OSF suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excess movement. Code 2.4.G.2

Both front shock absorbers have light misting of oil. 2.7.3

Front brake disc (doesn't say which one) worn pitted or scored. 3.5.1.i

OSF brake pad wearing thin. 3.5.1.G

So, my assessment is that it will need new front pads & discs, new front shocks & possibly new bushes before too long.

All consumables & not totally unexpected on a 60k car.

About right?

Thanks guys.

If the overall condition of the car and its price are right, go for it. If you can get the dealer to sort those advisories out first, so much the better. Failures of the rear transmission are pretty rare and I think I was just very unlucky.

DGW, you read my mind!

Dealer has agreed to sort out the advisories.

Deposit paid this morning. Collection soon.

There's another Skoda set to join the family!

There will shortly be a 59 plate 2010 Scout lining up alongside our 10 plate 2010 vRS.

I'm a lucky boy!

Welcome to Haldex 4 ownership. :)

Dunc,

My vRS had the oil misting advisory on my mot in June......garage said nothing to worry about and they will keep an eye on it at next service.

I am just coming up to 60k as well.

DGW, yes, Haldex 4 feels good!

Have winter tyres for the vRS, so with 4WD on the Scout, I've got next winter covered. If it gets really bad (I Iive in a small village on a 14 degree slope), I can put the winters on the Scout! That'll be as good as it gets, grip-wise!

Happy days.
