Any way to see fault codes without VCDS?

Featured Replies

While driving my VRS TDI DSG back from France on Monday it developed what I can only describe as a misfire under load. In town with windows down it sounded like it was pinking as I pulled away but it's a diesel. On the road at speed if I went up hill or tried to accelerate there was a bad vibration. I stopped for a break and after that the vibration went and it accelerated fine.
However the 'pinking' remained but reduced. By the next morning when I took it into the dealer as you can guess it was fine. I may now be over sensitive but I'm sure the engine sounds harsher and the metallic sound is still there but nowhere near as bad.
The dealer was great but told me they could no longer quickly plug the car into a code reader and it would need to be booked in to be connected to their system (can't remember what it's called) and effectively connected back to Skoda.
I suspect I had/have a faulty injector. I'm assuming I would have a fault code in the system but how can I read them? Is VCDS the only way or is there a way I can display them in the Maxidot?

If it's just reading fault codes, you could try a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into the obd. Then use an app called Torque (android phone) and then scan for faults. Worked fine on my Leon, not tested it on my Skoda

I use the same setup as this for general fault finding and its excellent value for money and very effective(also on a nexus 5). All the guys at work know who to see when they have the engine light come on lol.
