Noisy 1st-2nd change

Featured Replies

Picked up a 2nd hand Citigo on Tuesday, 13 plate with the old gearbox/stick and just over 10k on it.

I've been driving the Fab vRS for the last 9 years, so it may just be me not used to a 60hp petrol and all, but when I change gear there's occasionally a quite loud (in my opinion) gear changing mechanical noise through the cabin.

It's worse when at higher revs (and lasts a bit longer like the clutch is sorting itself out) and tends to be mostly, but not exclusively, between 1st and 2nd - though that may be my driving style as i tend to hold onto 1st longer to get the thing moving.

I don't like it, but it doesn't sound 'broken' (yet). So I'm just after whether other people have this too and it's just a characteristic and lack of soundproofing. Or if it's something that's worth chasing up sooner rather than later?

I've no idea if you drive like me, but I normally push the clutch down just far enough to make the plates disengage. If this is the case with you, that could be all it is.

Can't say that mine is noisey but against the vRS then yes it's noisey. Less sound proofing for one.

TBH little point really holding on to 1st in the high revs, the engine is torquey (is that a word?) enough to have short changes. I'm still able to keep up with the flow of traffic. Infact it's a very lazy car to drive very much like the fabia.

(unless in hilly sections then it becomes hard work lol)

This is definitely how I drive the Fabia, but as this is the other half's Citigo, I'm making a conscious effort to use the clutch 'properly'. And also to not drive with my hand resting on the gearstick (which, in itself has reduced some noise).

I've found that slowing the gear change down and giving it time to think between clutch down and clutch up reduces the noise. Whereas in the Fab I'm doing the opposite.

I'll try getting used to shifting earlier and see if that reduces the noise.

Yes mine is very similar if I hurry the changes then I get noise. If I slow the changes down then it's quiet.

I wouldn't do that as it's not good for synchromesh rings. Clutch is meant to push all the way down when you are going to change a gear.
