wat do these drive like and wat ya get from a full tank and wat good performance mods

Wat ya shud av found out before ya bot it!

Petrol or diesel?

Petrol drives much like a slightly bigger (and more wieldy) Mk6 Golf GTi. In other words v well.

The diesels drive equally well (if perhaps slightly nose heavier) just IMHO the 170 CR motor doesnt endow the vRS with enough go to justify the vRS badge. Had a Mk2 vRS Blackline for 12 months and only reason I sold it was the performance was disappointing, nothing a map or tuning box wouldnt largely sort but for me vRS's work much better as TSi than TDi.

If I ever bought another vRS (would be a Mk3) would definitely be TSi.

Main advantage is the diesel is considerably more frugal and when up to speed makes a good motorway cruiser. Think late 30's/early 40's mpg & 500+ mile range v late 20's/early 30's mpg and 350+ miles range real world. A sensibly driven TSi can just about make 40mpg but you'll have no fun doing so, diesel can make 50 mpg with the same treatment.

Both respond well to mapping. The TSi can see about 250-260hp and 300+lb/ft from a stage 1 map....stage 2 (filter and exhaust) 260-275hp and a bit more torque still. Big mod is to replace the K03 blower with a KO4 (as fitted to the S3/Golf R etc) and a bigger intercooler....with just a map you can see approx 305/310hp and similar peak torque to a mapped KO3 but naturally with a stronger power/torque output across the whole rev range.

The CR can push out approx 205-210hp & 320lb/ft from a stage 1 map; from that point its really baby steps. I gather some people have gone stage 2 (DPF removal) and 220-230hp and a bit more torque is possible. Gather the CR is rather limited by its injectors; you can get bigger injectors for the earlier PD engined cars which means you can stick a bigger turbo on and run more fuel/air....there are a few 300hp+ 1.9/2.0 PD engined cars out there but they smoke like nobodies business and would imagine the power isnt particularly useable (difficult to put down)

An answer in the same language as that used by the OP - approximates to sort of UK English.
