Engine misfiring / cylinder 3

Featured Replies

My car has been misfiring for the last few days, i took it into a garage, their diagnostic results showed a miss fire on cylinder 3, they thought it just needed a good service, so i had the spark plugs and all filters changed but the problem continued. After some forum reading i can see there is a common fault with the coil packs on the FSI engine, so i thought i might try replacing it

I was just wondering how easy they are to replace? with the information that cylinder 3 is miss firing, logic tells me that it would be coil pack 3 that needs to be replaced, if this is true how do i know which one that is? are they numbered from left to right?

Or should i just replace all 4?

thanks

Swap 3 & 1 & see if the misfire moves.

I'd do all 4 if it isn't going to cause excessive wallet pain

As Brad says it, swap them and go for a drive, then read the ECU and see is the one you swapped is misfiring still, then you have located a bad coil.

Its not hard to change, just careful when you unplug coils from the plastic top bar, as they have a small tooth to keep them in place and you might break it. Then a little force to twist and pull up.

Good luck.

I loop a cable tie around the front & back (cord or string would work as well) and pull them out with that
