50,000 miles VRS.

Featured Replies

Posted this last night but it doesnt seem to have worked...

Car clocked over 50k yesterday. Not sure how many we have on here on that kind of mileage. Any issues relating to age I need to be looking for? Also noticed a knocking/scraping noise coming from front drivers wheel when turned to the right.(not full lock though?!?!)Stumped me at the moment.

Age related engine problems arent an issue as such. As the engine has only done 5k :)

Sharkriders first VRS did similar mileage, I'm sure he didn't have any problems with his! I'm sure he comment at some point :-)

I'm at 31,000 and starting to feel like my suspension is starting to deteriorate. Not helped by shocking roads round here and my lowering springs! Like the MK1, the MK2 has butter bushes....

Yeah my suspension is showing age, also with horrendous roads.. Not a clue what the knocking is. It sounds to me like my wheel catching a panel. But ive been told its possibly cv joint. Dont know if it would make the noise when turned both ways though as it only does it when turned right, and not on full lock. Need that sorting before anything. Got bushes ready to go in. Also thinking of getting some shocks while ecp have the sale on. Unfortunately for my car, this has come at a very bad time of year and its just cured me to be honest.

Dampers definitely show their age after 40k, my bushes are all fine but they are worth changing anyway. Engine at 52k for me seems sweet as ever.

I was reluctant to sell my car on here because the clutch pack/DSG had developed a few extra noises you could notice when going over speed humps that I was unsure about, probably standard stuff

Yeah definitely going to get dampers done. Car just seems a bit tired. I'll sort it. :D

Thinking of going standard replacements though as im thinking of upgrading the car. Or running it into the ground. Im undecided. Dont know how much life I will get out of the car in general. Before it gets ridiculous. 100k+ I hope.

my old one went with 50k on it a year and a half ago... was fine :) didn't even need pads by then :)

Good to hear!

Got 72K miles on mine with no real issues, one the usual.

Uses a bit of oil, about a litre every 5K but then a do treat it quite hard.

Gearbox gets confused occasionally.

Seems to heat soak and go off the boil a bit if used hard for a few miles.

Body rolls too much but then always did.

Like the idea of a 1.8 TSI Mk 3 Octavia to replace it eventually, similar perfornance.

Sorry, dont mean to sound stupid....but. what do you mean apart from usual? I know belts/chains etc but luckily as the first post said ive got a new engine.

My list comprises of;

Bushes, shocks. Got new springs in. Obviously brakes.

Lots of parts on the Fabia 2 VRS are marginal as you have mentioned as it is built down to a price but then it is also VW quality and is designed to last about 400,000 Km in "average" driving conditions.

It is deeply worrying that VAG only give it a 60K mileage warranty but then there are some very expensive bits that sometimes go pop between 60K and 100K mileage and therefore a alternate warranty is a good investment IMO.  I use the CSMA warranty, £180 a year and good coverage it seems.

Oil is the additional cost that can add up to £200 a year or so with top ups and oil changes.

Mine did not like the Original Equipment Conti 2s, too little grip then overheated when driven hard. Nexen N'Fera summers and Winguard sport winters seem to deal with that in a cost effective manner but a pair of extra full sized rims were the price to pay to make live easy to change summer to winder and visa versa.

Liked the Fabia 1 VRS but felt quicker than it was as standard though like the 60 mpg.

Can live with its short-comings as they are minor and there is few alternatives that are good enough and cheap enough to want to change. A Focus ST would be tempting if they did an auto version.
