Very minor rust - repair tips please =)

Featured Replies

Hi guys I've got minor (seems like surface only) rust patches on the leading edge of the rear arch. I'm a sheet metal worker so quick comfortable about tackling this myself.

But chemicals wise, I don't know where to begin. Could you kind gents (and ladies) recommend primers and paints? Are Halfords ones any good?

Have attached some pictures just incase there's something I've missed. All advice welcome and appreciated =)

I guess it depends on what kind of finish you want. For the size of the areas would it not be better to get a quote from a decent body shop? At least they will be able to blend it in to the existing paintwork rather than it sticking out like a sore thumb. Also it's more likely to be more durable those are areas where the paintwork is likely to take a bombardment of stones and chemical nasties, such as Road salt, tar and brake dust, all of which paint doesn't like very much.

If your adamant of doing it yourself and are not too worried about the finish then halfords will be fine, I personally would not spend to much getting the "best" materials if it's a quick and easy job your after.

Cheers, valid points. Not being able to take a lot of time off and depending on this car for commutes are the main driving force for DIY, as well as saving labour.

If any body repair and respray folks like to PM me with a rough estimate, I'd appreciate it.

Your welcome.

I have similar rust patches although it's along the seal and not the bottom part of the wing and rear arch.

I too thought of doing it myself due to money and the fact that I already have some very good zinc primer called Zinga that I brought for my Mk1, plus access to a workshop and tools.

But after reading a little bit hear and little bit their I decided against it. My painting skills are nowhere near good enough to get the finish I would be after and I know for sure I would only end up annoyed with myself. I tried painting an arch and front bumper for my Mk2 years ago and the finish mostly on the wing was nowhere near good enough It looked horrible.

So I've decided that I will get the seals and a few other bits done properly, hopefully it won't cost too much.

Good luck chap hope it works out alright for you.
