Oil catch tank?

Featured Replies

Planning to clean out the throttle body this year and was thinking of installing a catch tank to keep it clean.

Anyone installed one on their mk1? What size do the inlets and outlets need to be (diameter)?

Plenty out there in ebay but want to hear people's advice first.

Cheers

Only had it on for about a week so not looked to see what it has picked up yet

Brilliant thanks mate. Lot out there with only 10 or 15mm fittings which aren't suitable.

But would it pass the MOT with a breather on it? I thought it would need to be sealed for that and to create the correct suction in the crankcase.

I was in the same boat and did a bit of research to find one person says one thing and another person says another.  Best thing i could find was this

Breather style Vs. Sealed

Not all cars have been designed the same. Weather high performance, daily driver, off road, motorcycle, or combination, there is a PROPER catch can to benefit your vehicle. How do you know what type is best? First you have to determine what the vehicle will mainly be used for.

Is your vehicle high performance? Do you race or drive it like you stole it? Then you would probably benefit more from a Breather Style. This style vents the blow-by gasses to the atmosphere while catching the sludge in its resivoir. It may not be legal to run this type in some states for emissions control purposes. Allowing the crankcase to vent freely will prevent unwanted drag on the internal engine components. This frees up the pressure being created and all the other benefits of the sludge being separated from the fuel. Honda, Nissan and the like are most common to use a breather style.

Is your vehicle a daily driver? Are you trying to get the best fuel mileage possible? Then a sealed type may be best for you. This type of catch tank allows your blow-by gasses to be re-burnt while separating the sludge. Some PCV type systems will require the metered air to re-enter the motor in order to run properly. This is from the way the vehicle was designed. Most high tech vehicles are this way. For example BMW, Volvo, and so on. This sealed type is best for passing emission tests and will not adversely affect the test outcome. It may also HELP the test outcome by filtering out the bad stuff and allowing your motor to burn the fuel more cleanly.

I went with a saikou michi can due to a awesome reputation

Just some advice brit24, it might be worth mentioning that you have a 2.0ltr engine, everyone in this octavia section assumes everyone else has a 1.8 turbo engine. The advice above might not be of any good to you. Not trying to come across as funny or anything just no point you buying the wrong stuff lol

I do just asume everyone has a 1.8t vrs i must admit :D

Thanks for the tip! Yes I see most internet searches bring up the 1.8, 2.0l petrol doesn't appear that common.

Beautiful engine bay! Congrats!

Nice place to put the catch tank. I have the same room there next to the battery.

I imagine it will be a sealed unit as the standard set up. Besides that the fumes can come into the car with a breather. I've had that before, with some blow by of course on an older engine.

You have changed all of the piping/alloy fittings there haven't you? Really nice job. Would like to do the same on mine. Did you use a particular supplier?

Also what air intake are you using there?

+1 for the Saikou Michi can. Here is mine that was expertly fitted by Lloyd55vrs

The braided lines are fuel line from torques on ebay

The breather pipe is forge fuel/oil silicone hose in black

The blue 25mm is the diverter relocation

The intake is the forge kona :)

Ask again if ive missed ur actual question hehe
