Removing cigarette smells

Featured Replies

Hi All

JUst picked up a 14 month old Fabia Monte Carlo. I am not a smoker and the car smell if cigarette smoke. Anyone got some advise on the best way to remove the smell from the car.

Thanks

Glenn

Personally. Id send it to a decent valeter and see what they say. They have access to stronger products and have a lot more know-how.

Bowl of white vinegar left in the car overnight.

No. I don't know either, but apparently............ :notme:

Febreze the bejeezus out of all the fabrics inc the roof lining.

Then put one of their tobacco neutralisers under the seats.

Then replace with your own preferred smell.

The california scents range is good, long lasting and powerful.

They even do a new car smell air freshener.

So many products now available.

But for a very long time i have used something that is much cheapness and certainly helps.

An Onion cut in Half, & the 2 halves left in the car, and change for a fresh one after a day,   & a lump of coal left in the car.

Both will absorb smells and help reduce the old smoke smell.

I have to say George I've never picked up an air freshener and thought

'NO, there must be a cheaper way!!!' And then put it back on the shelf....

It's pretty hard to find any air freshener that costs more than about 4 quid.

Even at Halfords prices.

I'm sure a dog turd on the dashboard would also mask the smell

of tobacco and you just find them in the park so even more 'much cheapness' but....

Read my post it was not about masking the smell, it was about absorbing and disposing of the Onion and the lump of coal.

(which works like Charcoal Odour Eater insoles do now, years after my Granny taught me to suck eggs.)

Well you are kind of young and happy to spend.

Some of us have been buying old cars, caravans and properties from when we learned many a mickle makes a muckle.

Use what works and you have to hand or free.

So instead of trying to hide smells you got rid of them first.

Each to their own really.

Something with activated charcoal will work better than coal.

A bowl of this maybe - http://www.thewaterfiltermen.co.uk/Activated-Carbon-Granules-950g?gclid=CL-NoeaEgcACFRHHtAod8BoA4A

Other than that fabreeze or you could try a liberal dusting with baking powder leave for a bit then hoover up.

Fag smoke is enough to stop me buying a car, good luck getting rid of the reek.

You'll probably need to use an air conditioning treatment since the smell will likely be in the system now.

Use a strong solution of APC (I use G101) and spray on to all plastics and use brush to agitate then wipe clean with cloth. Don't forget a/b/c pillar plastics. Then use an aqua vac to get smell out of seats and carpets. Hire one or find a decent detailer, I'd guess about £125 for the above professionally. Depends how much you value your time and how much costs to hire equipment if you can't beg borrow or steal.

Activated charcoal works well, but if you really want to get rid of as much of the smell as quickly as possible, you need to remove the headliner and clean above it.

Onions and coal do work, but not as quickly as activated charcoal (which is now available cheaply on eBay).

Start smoking ....

Sorry !!

Few drops of lavender essence/oil? Supposed to help you relax too.

My cousin who is a bit wierd gave me one of those incense burner things and some essential oils. They do actually seem to clear cooking smells that linger. I think they are for yanging your ying though.

If you were a bit nearer, you could have a handful of the real stuff from the garden.

A steamer for the headlining etc and wet extraction of the carpets and seats.

Clean the hard surfaces first and you're well on your way.

After a dash dressing such as poorboys natural look dressing will clean and protects the dash and smells of coconuts.

Finally put in a new pollen filter and cllean the vents etc too with the steamer.

An air con bomb will probably help remove smells from the system.

Good vacuum

Clean the dash and plastics with some nice smelling cockpit cleaner or whatever.

Buy a california scents coronado cherry pot. And when in car have the windows open on a nice day for a few days!

Will smell lovely after that

Now for my serious answer, The wifes car stank of dog until Sunday, I just doused the seats in AG interior cleaner and wiped it over with a damp micro fibre towel.

No more dog smell, I'm sure any scented cleaner would have the same effect.

I had the same issue with my Octy I just picked up. Proper rammy inside, buts it's had a good deep clean now.

I used Autobrite FAB interior cleaner

http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/index.php/fab-interior-upholstery-cleaner.html

I didn't dilute and used it neat on pretty much everything.

Result is an almost free smoke smelling interior. I reckon one more going over and it'll sort it.
