First time buy - Help with Mk1 Octy

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I found this forum whilst looking around the web for Skoda Owners reviews and thought I'd pose the question here as well.

Im looking to get my first car. Although I've been instructed numerous times to go Japanese and go small, there's this 98 1.6 Octavia thats looking very nice. After having found it I saw that Skoda was ranked as a very reliable car. Nevertheless, since it is very cheap (1000€ in Eastern Europe) and quite old (109 000 miles) I was wondering what should I be looking for when going to see it.

What are the parts that must have been changed out by now, what kind of service has it needed  etc?

Im not really a car guy, but am trying to become one so any advice would be great!

Timing belt and water pump, should be on its 2nd one by now and a good service history. Im assuming its an 8valve engine been a 98 car so AKL engine code, spark plugs are a pain to do so make sures there evidence of them been done but if not dont worry to much. Check all the electrics work. Apart from that just check the usual

As above, with the note that pretty much everything on those older versions with the standard suspension is tough enough to stand some misuse.

What do you guys think about the price though? Is 1000€ wayyyy to cheap or pretty much in line for cars of that age?

Alot of the users on here are from the uk so our used car prices could differ vastly from those your country. 1000€ is just short of £800 and i wouldnt want to pay that in the UK but that might be considered a bargain to you :)
