Clutch Slip

Featured Replies

Had the car serviced and garage reported clutch is starting to slip, car has done 91,000 miles on clutch. I have noticed that if I floor it from around 2000 rpm to 3500 rpm the clutch slips, but in normal driving no slip and has done since since I have had the car about 20,000 miles ago.

If I treat the clutch nicely, roughly how much more miles do you think it will do before replacement is required, so I can start saving up the pennies and have baked beans on toast for tea each night ?

That's a how long is a piece of string question.

Depends on how it's used, fully loaded, hilly area, town driving will all make it wear quicker. Can't really say how long it will last.

Car use is roughly

73% just me driving to work (32 miles round trip inc 4 miles in traffic, total 7400 miles per year).

22% with two up ( 500 motorway, and the rest journeys of up to 4 miles per day, total 2000

5% towing 500kg with two up (500 miles).

95% of the time I drive the car with economy in mind.

Now I wonder how the long will last with this type of use  :giggle:

The fact you have already done 20k miles with the clutch wearing makes it even harder to gauge the remaining life left. When you consider that if you leave it till the clutch does a complete fail that is going to cost you a tow as well. Also you are likely to wreck your dmf too. You may find it could be your dmf failing anyway. I would plan to replace asap if it were me.

I will speak to garage to find out there view on the severity of the slip. Thought is was best practice to get DMF replaced when doing a clutch to save on paying two lots of labour.

I am hoping the clutch will last a couple of more months, so I can save up some of the cost.

BTW what kind of cost would I be looking for a clutch/DMF replacement?

Update

Have spoken to garage, who advised that if I used the car like I was i.e carefully I could get up to another 6 months. However, when I mentioned that I occasionally tow a small trader he advised that it would be advisable to have the clutch replaced.

Have been quoted £500 to £600 for the clutch, and an extra £300 if DMF needs replacing, using genuine parts. Is there any way of finding out if the DMF needs replacing before the gearbox comes out?

That's mega expensive

What car is it?

Unbelievable price. £500/£600 including parts & labour would be more reasonable.

Have a look on Eurocarparts site for the parts as they're running a promotion campaign. It's standard practice to replace the DMF when doing a clutch.

Just to clarify the price of £500 to £600 inc parts, labour and 20% VAT, and work will be done by ex Skoda/VW technicians.

Phoned up Mr Clutch and they want £800 all in, main dealers were £1200 :wonder:
