Using 2/3 then D in an automatic - ok?

Featured Replies

I have a 2.0l automatic and have recently been using more the 2nd and 3rd gear before I switch into drive to use the higher power band at 4-5500 rpm. As we all know the autos like to shift much earlier.

Does this prematurely wear the auto boxes down or can I continue to use 2nd but mainly third without issues? For example pulling out on a filter road to the motorway or just overtaking and enjoying the higher revs. 3rd gets me up to 70-80 mph very quickly before I put it into D.

Giving it an Italian tune up helps to keep things clean IMHO. Speaking from experience (5 years with a alfa 1.7 boxer with dellorto carbs). Driving it lazily all the time made it fell sluggish (misses!).

i don;t see any problem, being an auto is hard to harm it

I don't see any issue other than that, if you're using the holds for acceleration and then just flipping back into drive you might find it easier to just use kick-down. Of course, that's dependant on exactly when this box changes up on full throttle.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Sometimes I just like to give it a full rev range to keep it lively. Driving at low revs all the time IMHO is never too good for an engine.

No problem doing that at all, will not harm anything.

good to know.

Had an old alfa romeo before and it always liked a good Italian tune up after sluggish driving in the city. My stepfather has a vrs and regularly revs to redline and it runs sweet after many years.
