Spring boing?!

Featured Replies

Hi all, me again lol.

I have had fk ak street coilovers fitted for about 2 weeks now. The problem ive got is every now and then I get a "boing" sound when turning the wheel to full lock or while maneuvering. Im not running them silly low maybe 3/4 the way down?

Everythings tight and looks "normal" I dont get any knocking when driving its just loq speeds when putting a fair bit of lock on... ive read about spring binding and movement within the rubber mounts.

Just annoying and can be hurd outside which is also embarressing, especially if the brakes join in with a moo or 2 lol.

Thanks guys [emoji16]

Top mount needs replacing. While your at it do the bearing too. The noise u are hearing is the spring turning. Had this happen on my old clio.

More likely to be seized bearing or seizing up bearing. Nothing to do with top mount as such. The bearing is stopping the top mount and spring cap and spring turning freely and the boing sound is the spring coming out of the spring cap as it is fighting with the bearing and spring cap.

Replace bearing and top mounts both sides quick, else you will wreck or snap your spring. Avoid driving if you can.

Bearing was what I meant lol. Got the 2 mixed up.

I have a noise like that and it is the roll bar clamps being completely wrecked. What happens if you jerk the wheel left and right at moderate speed? Liek 20mph.

edit: It is more likely to be bearing binding, perhaps you fitted the top nuts too tight. Hard/impossible to do I imagine.

Its an intermittent boing so I think its whats been suggested. The bearing starting to seize. I cant make it do it plus I dont think ive over tightened top nut.

I tried taking a short cut and not replacing top mount and bearing even though its always advised where ever ive read.

Lesson learned!!

Only £12.50 on ebay aswell. Tut.

I put a nice bit of lithium grease on my bearings when I put them in. I don't know how much of a difference it makes.

Replaced both top mounts with bearings, the passenger side was seized as suggested.

Many thanks for the advice guys.

Unfortunately on the way home today, doing a quick manoeuvre (on bumpy gravel) I experienced a lot of loud creaking which sounded spring related. It also did it a little bit when I parked up and went from lock to lock but after that I couldnt replicate the sound. Is this normal from time to time?

This is the first time ive heard anything since I fitted new top mounts..

I get paranoid when I get strange sounds that I dont think are normal :(

It sounded similar but not the same this sounded more like creaking than the spring boing, it just did it the same when turn the wheel.
