Clutch pedal "thudding"

Recommended Posts

I own an Octavia 2010 5speed manual, TDI105.

I have noticed that when I depress the clutch slightly, just until some resistance is noticed, I can feel a slight "thudding" in the clutch pedal. I dont know how to describe the feeling, but its som kind of vibrations that are clearly related to engine rpm. When I rev the engine the thudding/vibrations increases seemingly in line with the increased rpm of the engine.

Also, I have the last couple of months noticed that there is something strange with the drivetrain. It sometimes sounds/feels like there is some kind of play in it. Most obvious is when driving slow on 2nd gear and alternating between depressing and let-go of the accelerator pedal (in real world, this occurs eg when driving through a small roundabout at mediocre speed). When the car transits from beeing retarded by the engine (throttle not pressed) to beeing accelerated by the engine (acc pedal pressed) there is clearly some kind of play.

Any ideas if there is something wrong with my car? Or is it just me beeing paranoid?

The clutch pedal vibration is a well documented trait of certain VAG cars so don't worry, it's an unwanted characteristic of the design but usually nothing to worry about and not indicative of a failure waiting to happen.

I can't imagine there being any noticeable slop in the transmission without an appreciable sound eg whining/droning.

Perhaps your engine is just in need of a service as the throttle response is not all it should be.

I have had this on mk2 Octavia I found the master cylinder rod at the clutch pedal end to be broken the clutch still worked, but found when depressing the pedal there was a delay and noise as the broken rod connected , I replaced the master cylinder and the slave cylinder at the same time bleed the system and the fault as solved . it was caused by the ball end of the rod at the pedal end was seized
