Gearbox Oil?

Featured Replies

Has anyone changed the oil in their gearbox?. If so is there a good oil or is bog standard gearbox oil ok?

It is meant to be "filled for life".

It seems in most cases it's good for about 100k miles then people can often get notchy gear changes which a gear oil change cures.

After seeing the colour of the oil after about 90k miles in my old Cordoba PD130 I would change the oil as a matter of course around this mileage if not a little before.

I changed the gearbox oil on my 2008 octavia petrol vrs this year & the car had covered around 50,000miles,the oil that was drained was black & well past it,i used genuine oil,it was a synthetic oil in my gearbox, not sure what oil is required for the 4x4 box, best ask your dealer what oil is required. Genuine oil is best & my gear change has improved lots since the oil change.

You don't mention if you have manual or automatic. DSG (at least the 6 speed wet clutch) needs the oil flushed and replaced every 40K

Good point! i just assumed he has a manual 6 speed box.

And it's a fair assumption - I'm just biased because I've got an auto :D

As with engine oil, I think VAG have their own spec gear oils. I vaguely remember its a synthetic?

I change mine every 3-4 years or so and it does make a difference.

I have change gearbox oil on all my octavias I have used semi synthetic EP75w90 hypoid gear oil at 100k cured notchy gear changes and the boxes lasted upto 200k when traded in .
