Grommet Leak

Featured Replies

Well I've not been here for a while. Internet syndrome isn't it - whilst everything is OK you tend not to post ;)

After having wet passenger footwells (both rear and, more recently, front) for a while I decided to have a good old root around on me back on the floor (whilst getting a wet shirt!).

Under the glovebox, near the center column, there's a solid-looking plastic bar that goes from dash to the bulkhead. This plastic bar sits atop a rubber grommet which looks like it's folded back on itself a little (as your ear might look if you folded it over).

This grommet is weeping water both in the center and around the edges.

The track mark on the floor seems to also point to this being the point of ingress. So - what is that grommet, errm, grommetting (i.e. is this black plastic bar actually a pipe?) and how would one reseal it (on accout of it's got this large immovable black bar pressing down on it).

I've read the various posts about pollen filters - also Quinten's post about using a certain grommet behind the pollen filter to pass an ICE cable into the cabin - is this the same one? it seems too low ... using my arm as a measure I'd place it vertically about half-way-up bulkhead (from the floor) and horizontally behind the dump valve (ish) but perhaps I'm just misjudging ...

Maybe I outta go take a photo ...

... 10 minutes later, 3 piccies of the footwell ... picture speaks 1k-words etc ... yellow strip is obviously the top of the ECU peeking over the carpetting. The gommet even has some water conveniently leaking out of it for effect ...

Sounds like your a/c drain isnt fitted correctly.

Sadly to get it in right its dash and heater box out.

Having seen the piccies now, is that what that sturdy plastic rod is? A drain pipe from the a/c system?

What's the box it's attached to then (presumably the place the water is collecting...)? I kinda assumed the "bar" was just a support rod for the dashboard and water was coming in from the outside, not trying it's best to get outside and failing to do so ...

The black "pipe" in the picture - I've not been out to look but that "lump" at the nearer end, is that a screw? Is that pipe detachable? Can I just unscrew it, take it out and reseat it in the grommet then screw it back together?

I don't want to undo a screw like that and find that (unlikely I know) refrigerant gas starts spewing out, or washer-bottle water piddles all over the floor or something else daft like that ...
