Car hesitant to start

Featured Replies

Went to start the car today and it made a clicking noise but didn't want to start. Left it a bit and tried again it clicked again but did at least start.

Any ideas what it could be?

Battery? Starter?

If you leave the cacr overnight, what voltage do you get across the battery teminals?

Yeah after a little while. Had to bump start it to come home though. It's clicking but just not cranking the starter. I've got a day off tomorrow so will whip the battery out and inspect the wires to the connector

Sounds more like a battery/starter motor issue. The wire to the starter snapped on mine. Started fine going to sainsburys but when I got in to go home absolutely nothing happened. No clicking nothing! Had to push the bloody thing!!! Got a new plug and wire for less than £10.

See if you can swap the battery with your brothers and see if that makes a difference. If not then it's going to be the starter.

Same thing happened to my dad's finest peugeot. Thought it was the battery but it turned out to be the starter motor starting to lock up. Sometimes it would start with a wallop from a hammer!

Removed battery and found this

Looks like it is the starter motor as the wire is in tact

It must be the starter playing up then.

Balls. Eurocarparts list the Bosch starter as £200+

Might get the cheapy cheap one for the time being as I go on holiday the Monday after castle combe

Give it a few taps with a hammer and see if that makes a difference. Then you know for sure it's the starter. Helps if someone can do it while you start the car.

Not easy to get to while the battery tray is in place.

Chris gave it a whack last night, but didn't want to start still.,getting a new one later

Replaced the starter motor and it fired up straight away.

Problem solved

btw you coult try cleaning up the starter motor yourself to keep as a spare or sell on. or get it refurbished

alot of the time I find there is just junk on the motor. clean all the moving parts up coat in wd40.then put in a vise and use a spare battery or jump pack to manually operate the starter to get it working again
