Going to look at/buy a 59 reg vRS LE, what should I look for

Featured Replies

As the title suggests I am going to look at and hopefully buy a '59 reg vRS Limited Edition.

Is there anything I should check, when I see it, apart from service history?

Cheers for your help,

I believe the alloys were noted for easily corroding on the LE's, somebody may correct me though.

Other than the normal servicing there's not much else.

Petrol or diesel?

Check about the cambelt as it should have had one (4 years or 60,000 miles).

Estate?

If its a petrol then i think the LE's were fitted with the TSI engine which has a timing chain not a cambelt, the alloys on these can be damaged quite easily by potholes etc.

check the wheels are round they buckle very easy .

quite a few  le owners have changed them for different alloys for this reason me included

As others have said check alloys.

I got mine repaired by them as it was damaged.

Also check for excessive tyre wear on the rear tyres. Might need the rear tracked and will cause the tyres to wear uneven giving a jagged effect on the edges of the tread.

I would insist on them changing the cam chain tensioner as part of any deal, unless it's had a replacement engine already due to the well known cam chain tensioner failure problem, which I have myself experienced.
