intermittent stalling

Featured Replies

howdy, since last week car has been stalling once it has stopped at maybe traffic lights or ain traffic, when it goes to pull away it sometimes loses revs and cuts out,i then restart and away it goes no problem at all and seems to run fine and then no problems for a while and then decides to stall again, have got it booked in at local garage monday but wondered if anyone has any pointers before hand.many thanks

Fuel filter? When was it last changed?

Any management lights on to indicate a faulty camshaft sensor or somthing?

Is this the 1.4 8v MPI engine please?

Sounds more like a failing coilpack.

Edit: It's almost never the fuel system on a petrol engine Hutchy, Enzo Ferrari had a plaque on his desk that read "It is ALWAYS the ignition" (in Italian of course) to which he would point when an Engineer would run in with a question.

Guess fuel filters are just a con then.

Sounds like you've got this coverd anyway, enjoy.

Of course they're not, but in the UK where we have very clean pump fuel the filter is hardly ever clogged, interestingly as a filter starts to clog up it actually gets more efficient at filtering dirt, however it does start to restrict flow volume which invariably manifests itself as high speed/load fuel starvation so I never suspect a fuel filter during general running, only when there is a loss of power while hillclimbing or at high speed.

Thought you'd be interested in the Ferrari anecdote.

Us Northen Monkeys wouldn't understand all that Ferrari gizmo tech.

car runs fine when cold but cut outs  intermittently, when warmed up   it runs fine

Ok, change the ECT sensor, it sounds like it's running too lean when it's cold.

hello, have changed the ect and the car is the same, still cutting out when warm.this doesn't happen all the time.if i put foot on accelerator very slowly then i can pull away ok,if put foot down too quick then power dies and car cuts out.any ideas please

Did you try the fuel filter?

Fuel pump. I had the same issue some time ago.

Could be a blocked fuel tank breather.

Does it stall/cut out less frequently when the fuel tank is full?

haven't done fuel filter yet, have had it in local garage and been looked at but not found owt yet ,doesn't matter wether tank is full or not ,can't understand why happening because it runs ok when street driving or on motorway ,just happens now and again when come to a halt and then go to pull away.mechanic at garage cleaned 1- 2 things out[not throttle body] gave it 3 trips and never cut out once-?????????

I'd try checking if the cat is blocked. Probably not that but worth ruling out

  • Author

how do you do that?

If it only does it when got then I'd get it got and unbolt the cat so the gasses come out before the cat. If it runs better then you know the cat is blocked. Used to see it a lot on vauxhalls but usually they wouldn't run or if they did they'd cut out as soon as you tried to rev it. Not sure how the exhaust is on your car you may have to actually unbolt the manifold

ok cheers

car still stalling .if you put accelerator in gently and build up revs it goes ok, if you press pedal down normal it seems to gasp for a second and then dies but then you can start it no problem and drive away.this never happens for the first half hour or so only when car has got warm
