Lacquer overload?

Featured Replies

So after removing my door bumpstrips i stumbled upon a nasty suprise unfortunately...

i was pointed in the direction of the car styling+car section as i hear you guys may be able to help my predicament somewhat :).

Heres the picture of the culprit below:

Ill explain a little better whats going on in the photo, basically from what i can tell it appears that there is an excess of lacquer/clearcoat around where the bumpstrip used to sit, i ran a fingernail over it and a piece flaked off, so i can only assume its lacquer..

Not wanting to damage the paintwork however i simply cleaned the area up and left it for now, it appears that there was too much lacquer applied when the car was originally sprayed i can only guess, and there is a small patch where the lacquer appears to be flaking off a little, its almost as if the car was orignally painted then someone put more lacquer over the top of the original paintjob?

anyway enough of my uneducated opinions on what it might or might not be, could anyone tell me what the possible outcome might be if i wanted to get it sorted out?

Many thanks

Is there a chance that you damaged it removing the bump strips?

Hi and thanks for the reply, I doubt ive damaged it as the bumpstrips came off very easily, andso did the sticky residue, i used an old plastic card + some ambersill label remover to get the residue off so no nasty chemicals used either.

To me it almost looks and feels like dried superglue, almost like someone has got a clearcoat paintbrush and beaded a line of it ontop of my current paint, confused really as its only on one door hmm

Could it be glue that someone's re stuck a bump strip back in with again?

Why not take it to a car body shop and ask them what to do with it

Without seeing it I cant really suggest anything else

 there's people who do this everywhere! I realised on my 1st Fabia someone used super glue for a suspension bolt that was loose and crossthreaded

My mates frowned at me when i told them it was ex-fire service, think they assumed it was used like the police use their cars, quite the contrary it was an officers car :P, still had a fire extinguisher in the boot with a holder, a no smoking sign inside and a tracker + id stamp from the fire service lol

It could also be a previous repair on the panel(s) perhaps?

They may have been lazy and masked up the bump strips.

I have seen this before - many times in fact.

An inspection of said panel(s) with a suitable paint gauge might help.

I went to a paintshop earlier today and they told me that it appears when the car was originally sprayed, it had been done with the bumpstrips installed therefore im left with a paintline where there are infact 2 coats of paint on that part of the door , there is a visible step in the paintwork to show this :( . was told that it would be difficult to get out without stripping the door back and respraying it and the surrounding panels....

looks like im gonna have to put some new strips on and maybe get them colorcoded as i cant stand leaving it like this and im not paying ridiculous amounts of money to sort it :(

as above i took it to the bodyshop today, unfortunate that the circumstances would dictate a door respray for a proper finish.

However! i have just tempted fate and grabbed my stanley knife to try pick up the pieces of lacquer ( gasp horror! ) lol, it actually worked, all the pieces came off!! im still left with a step in the paintwork so rather than spending a tonne of cash im gonna do the above and get some colourcoded strips instead :).

Soo relieved that i could get the excess pieces off though! made such a nice job after i polished it that i was tempted to leave it, if only i wasnt so OCD :x
