Noisy steering

Featured Replies

The wife's car has developed a rather crunchy noise from the steering. I've only checked it whilst stationary so far, turning the wheel left to right. It sounds terrible.

Power steering oil level is fine btw.

Any ideas? I'm hoping it's not a new rack, they're 600 odd quid!

You have either air in system or not enough fluid or the rack or pump has gone. Are you sure you have enough fluid.

If rack is fubered then you can get much cheaper than that.

Top mounts changed. Further diagnostics has determined that the rack is the root of the problem. It creaks when turning the wheels.

Fluid is still at the correct levels therefore I'm assuming something internal is starting to give up the ghost.

Just need to find a cheap replacement rack now.

Have you tried bleeding the rack? Remove the cap off the fluid res and turn steering lock to lock a few times

No. Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a go and report back.

I've notice mine doing this to recently when stationary turning the steering left reveals a series of knocks, turning it right is a creak... I thought it was my CV joint nackered?
