road noise

Featured Replies

It's only me or somebody else noticed a bit high level of road noise at sustained speeds?

Compared to my Previous Superb, it is noticeably louder in the Octy. Less noise suppression felt/foam dampening whatever than say the Golf mk7 on which it is based as it is less premium than the Golf.

Also, it very much depends on road surface, when driving on the French autoroutes you could whisper to each other at 80mph due to the lovely asphalt they use compared to dear old Blighty. Don't know what the road surfaces are like in Italy, but if they are anything like the UK it's something you will have come to live with unless you want to modify the standard noise suppression.

There are companies out there which will do this for you or post you the kit. If you try that route please let all of us other deafened Octy 3 drivers know if the improvement / refinement is worth the cost.

the road noise could easily be down to your tyres. Different tyres create differing amounts of road noise I have found.

Thank you John,

I will try to tame the noise and will share my findings.

999rigger, agreed, but I feel there is room for improvement regardless of the tyre brand and/or pressure setting.

The Mk3 is massively quieter than then MK2

I think it's rubbish. Mine really gets on my nerves after 50 mile or so.

I'm seriously thinking may as well get Eibach or H&R lowering springs, some say they even improve the ride comfort over OEM springs and the lowering/handling gain is a bonus!

Spend a weekend in a 1.9 tdi Roomster and the Octavia will feel whisper silent... :) No seriously, although I did own a Roomster, I do find the Octavia very silent. Mind I have the 1.2 tsi... Regarding road noise I think the tires are very important. I changed from Continental to Pirelli and the difference was huge. Like getting a completely new car.

Ahem, glad that Pirelli improved.

My old PZeros (can't remember if nero o rosso) on 18" were simply awful. And besides being noisy, they were completely useless on wet roads.

My 17"s actually mount Dunlop. Not so bad, but I didn't yet test them thoroughly.

Wing mirrors above 70 kick out some noise for sure.
