Anyone roadtripped around the South of the U.S.A?

Featured Replies

Hi All, towards the end of the week I'll be heading to the US for a three week road trip. Having previously done a few around the West Coast and been no further East than Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas, this one is going to concentrate more around the East Coast and South Coasts.

My main problem is, I have very little knowledge of the US South Coast areas and above so am unsure whether to literally drive the South Coast to New Orleans or head inland through Alabama.

Do any of you guys have any experience or advice to offer as to what would make for a more interesting route. Shown below are the two choices I have. Any advice gratefully received. :)

I've driven the coast road you've highlighted on map 1 on a drive from Virginia down to Florida, nice drive.

as long as you don't paint in pink 'man love rules ok' down the side of the car you should be fine :D

We'll be doing the trip in my mates SUV - I've already told him I have a selection of large external stickers for it, along the lines of 'country music sucks', 'NASCAR is crap' and 'man love rules' lol

Any points worth a mention? :)

Watch for speed variants, not very well posted on areas and I got a nice ticket as I genuinly hadn't seen any signs. A sat nav showing speed limits would be handy, oh and if you stop, watch for the crocks!!

Thanks. Crocks? I'm ok re the driving in the US, I meant any must see places, things to do etc :)

Looking at your route in Pennsylvania you pass through Harrisburg. Go south on Highway 15 to Gettysburg, if you're interested in the American civil war this is a must see site.

Just back - great trip.

Covered just shy of 5,000 miles and over 93 hours of driving in two weeks and then had some time around New York and Connecticut.

New York
New Jersey
Connecticut
Delaware
Virginia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida
Mississippi
Alabama
Louisiana
Tennessee
Kentucky
Maryland

Favourite areas were probably Nashville and up although New Orleans was very enjoyable. The Smoky Mountains were fantastic. New York was pretty spectacular also. :)

Looks like a great trip. I was going to say "I just hope those States aren't listed chronologically..." but then I looked at the map and can see the route. Into NY and out from Baltimore? Or a slight double back and out from Dulles?

What's amazing is that, according to Google Maps, there's approximately the same amount of road works going on in that journey as there is in my regular Bangor - Bath journey!  :D British motorways eh? Gotta love 'em.

I was in the USA earlier this year - quite a bizarre traffic system over there. Overtaking on both sides on the freeway, and exits on both the left and right of the carriageway. It was a little unnerving, luckily I wasn't driving.
