New car....how to tax?

Featured Replies

Hope someone can shed some light on the new tax rules for me.

I picked up a VRS estate yesterday, I've not bought a second hand car for years and with the changes to the tax system I'm a little unsure as to what I need to do next.

According to the DVLA website I can apply for tax using the ref. no. from the new keepers supplement, I'll look into that tomorrow, but my question is, will the car be covered regardless until the end of the month (even though it's only a few days away), I'm just conscious of it not being road legal now that the ownership has been handed over to me and the last months tax was organised by the previous owner/dealer?

All help greatly appreciated :)

your car is not taxed unless you have taxed it.

There is no change over period the previous tax is now void as the car has been sold.

All sorted. Cheers for the heads up, glad I asked!

Frustrating that I've lost out on a months tax....also annoyed that you cant access the new monthly payments option when first taxing the car as well....although it's about all you can expect from the tax man I suppose :)

The new system insures that both the old and new owner pay for the whole month that the change of ownership happen in! More money for the DVLA!
For any future ref you can tax of the new owners slip via the on-line system and it need to be done before you drive the new purchase away

Well fingers crossed I wasn't caught by any ANPR cameras on my way back from the sale !

Taxed now though so hopefully all will be well. Cheers for the heads up though as I'm switching the ownership of my Golf to the wife this week so will be sure to sort the tax same day.

I taxed my new Yeti on Saturday online using the 12 digit number on the 'New Keepers' part of the V5C.

Had an email from the DVLA in a few seconds confirming the transaction.

That was the 25th, so I effectively gave the DVLA 25 days of car tax (about £12.30) and the previous owner gave them about £3.45. No big shakes to Jo Public really, but I'm sure it'll all add up for the DVLA / tax man.

Still no idea why 6 months tax is £9 more than half the cost of one years tax though! No extra work involved on behalf of the DVLA. No tax disc to send out. That really bugs me.

If you really want to deprive the tax man......

Delay it until the last day of the month.

Firstly sorn the car online on the last day of the month.

Next morning transfer ownership and re-tax the car in your wifes name.

If you just do the transfer on the 1st you will loose a months tax.

Of course you will have to keep the car off road between sorn and tax :)
