Replacing instrument cluster, have to re-code?

Hey,

So my instrument cluster is badly broken and corrupt and I need to either get a new one or a used one.

Either way, would it need to be recoded with vag-com? I can't just buy one and plug it in, even if immobilizer is disabled?

I had a look at one on eBay, but I am not sure.

It's for a skoda octavia 1.8 20v 1999 automatic estate.
