Does the 1.6 TDI need 60 or 65,000 to be run in?

Featured Replies

Cos having reached 66,000 I have started to notice a distinct increase in mpg's, even with the colder November days.

Like in the middle 60's over 50 miles of mixed driving.

And 63.5mpg over 11+11 miles tonight.

And got high 60's a few weeks ago, but that was, purely by happenstance, an exceptional run.

N.B.

These are trip comp figs, but judging from the lack of movement of the fuel gauge still within the 3% fig I established when the car was newer.

The engine was run in by 6000 km never mind 60000 km.

Well I doubt the 6000km fig, but it should not need 60,000 miles either.

Prob somewhere about 20 or 25,000 miles.

I genuinely am trying to figure what could have changed, other than my driving style, which was already focussed on smooth driving with fuel enconomy in mind, and which has not, that I can establish, changed significently.

Ignore the onboard computer, it is only a guide and there are so many external influences that can affect it, colder / denser air etc.

I would have expected the engine to have loosened up long, long ago.

I do find down here that anything below 12 or 13°c it wastes more fuel.
