140 v 170?

Featured Replies

Hi

Apart from the obvious 30 bhp is there much difference between the 2 engines is reality ??

Mainly doing motorway cruising ... was looking at a 170 Elegance but now liking the look of a TDF edition

Should I hold out for a 170 or would I be just as happy with the 140??

Cheers

If you're sitting on a motorway most of time you probably won't find much of a difference as most of the difference is in that extra bit of oomph you get when overtaking or accelerating very hard.  In fact, a lot of 1.6tdi drivers are perfectly happy on motorways, once they get up to the limit.  Its nice to have it when you need of course.  I do notice it but that's because I'm on two lane roads mostly and its great for getting past trucks!  Fuel economy is roughly the same with the engines.

I've had both engines in recent years - currently have the 140 as I wanted the Black Edition and that's what was available. Having been initially worried about losing the 30 horses I needn't have been concerned. The real life performance is seemingly little changed. Okay, it may have a little less poke when going for a tightish overtake but the 140 certainly isn't lacking. On the motorway you won't notice the difference. In terms of economy, the 140 gets 3 or 4 additional mpg on the same trips. My insurance dropped too which I assume is to do with the engine.  So, I would say you'd be happy with the 170 but equally happy with the 140. Both good engines that suit the car. Hope this helps.

170 all day long, the superb is a big car and those 30 horses really help.

When I test drove both I found the 140 lacking compared to the 170 which is why I ordered a 170

I test drove a 140 DSG and frightened myself to death when I floored the throttle coming out of a roundabout. A long way of saying that 140 is enough but many want a little more, hence the 170 option!!

(I bought a petrol manual! - low mileage and hence no DPF to worry about)

More than happy with my 140 - in the real world, am I really going to need those extra 30 horses? For me, No. The Superb is for cruising.

Also the 140 keeps my company car tax down!

I tow a caravan ( boo hiss) drive many kms in Spain with van attached many long hills, the 170 hp with dsg is brilliant, Pulling out on the A7 road in the Costa Del Sol , most dangerous road in Spain, dual carriageway with not many slipways the combination of DSG in sport mode and 170hp to accelerate and get up to speed is phenomenal. So for me 170hp every time.

If anything, I would have thought the difference would be more noticeable at motorway speeds?

If you ever use an OBD app such as torque, you will see how little power you actually need to pootle about. Different story for higher speed overtakes, though.

We purchased a 140 DSG the family run around. It's certainly got enough poke however I would have liked the 170 should one have came up because as men we always like more power :) my advice, if you purchase a 140 and it's not enough then there is always a remap :) a green line imo is just too sluggish

Up to about 60 mph the 140 and 170 are pretty similar, it's above that speed that the extra power on the 170 starts to be obvious. Similarly, the 1.6 pulls well up to about 50 mph and then the lack of acceleration becomes noticeable.

May i suggest you goto a dealer that has a 140 & 170 demo cars, as you are really just interested in engine @ motorway speeds, take each onto your nearest dual carriageway / M'way for 20-30 miles.

That should give you a feel for the engine.

Thanks for the advice guys

Took a brand new TDF out today with 140bhp .... a bit dull but not as dull as the interior :(

If its going to be a Superb to solve my motoring woes then it will have to be a 170 Elegance

I find the 140 SE adequate, the acceleration is good and top speed will hold above legal limit  up hill and down dale, I did a few jobs in mine yesterday, flat out up the gears changing before  2500 rpm on those roads that have dual carriageways/roundabouts/dual carriageways/roundabouts ad infinitum    , covered 250 + miles across various dual carriageways and motorways nothing passed me and it did 56 mpg :-) , happy days

A Superb estate is a big old bit of kit, ive had a 130PS Mk3 Mondeo (mental) and my Epica is 150PS, adequate without being awesome, id worry about a 105ps 1600cc Superb, maybe not when new but after 2 or 3 years and 100k miles it will surely tire?
