Need to protect dash/gearknob carbon fibre inserts?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering (for those who have their cars for some time, in particular the VRS) how sensitive/scratchable the dash inserts especially around the gear-knob are. (see the second pic in iain tbs gear-knob thread).

Since it's not real carbon fibre and quite exposed to anything one might put in the phone-box/ashtray, I am a bit worried it might scratch easily.

I was thinking of maybe protecting it with something like this and how easy is it to remove the insert around the gear-knob to to do this properly?

In case I am over thinking this, be nice, I am just trying to fill the time before I get my new car :notme:

Cheers

The section around the gear stick gator scratches very easily and shows up badly in bright sunshine. However, like the gloss black door pillars these scratches can be removed using a light cut foam pad and machine polisher (I had to remove scratches on the door carbon effect inset). However, I just haven't figured out how to remove this part from the car yet.

I suppose you could always recover them with 3M carbon fibre film... Might look good?

If you remove the offending parts and take them to a sign maker they will have a clear laminate that they can apply in return for a bit of beer money. I wouldn't try to do it yourself, applying vinyl is a dark art like plastering. All sign making shops has metres of the stuff lying around as off cuts
