Scout Intermittent failure to start

Featured Replies

My 2.0litre CR Diesel occasionally fails to engage starter motor. All the usual warning lights are on but none of them go off. An audible warning sound starts when the key is turned to engage starter motor.I checked all fuses under the bonnet and made sure the relay(assuming its a relay) with 100 stamped on it was pushed home. Battery terminals are clean and tight.Battery is in good condition .Try the key about one hour later and the car starts normally.Any ideas would be great.

Cheers ,Tony.

Faulty relay ?? Have you tried giving it a gentle tap. Try using a spare key if you have one to rule that out as a possible cause.

Can you be 100% sure the battery is good.

I've just been through the same issues as you. The fault wasn't regular or consistent enough for me to suspect the battery.

There have been issues with the starter motors on Octavia's.

However the battery was the original and at £80 for a Bosch S5 I thought it would warrant replacing the battery before exploring quotes for starter motors.

Put the new battery on and it is now faultless.

The bong you mention would suggest the battery to me too. The Octavia does 'bong' when the battery is too low.
