Any better bulbs for hid lights?

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says is there any better bulbs for hid lights? I'm not too sure what bulbs I've got in but I'm happy with the colour but the light just don't seem to project itself that far? It's a 2005 2.0tdi octavia elegance. Thank you

If your lights are going toward blue then you won't have much light on the road.  Human eyes aren't tuned to see into the blue end of the spectrum.  You may have this type which will hamper night vision.

If you want it to look blue you will have to live with the laws of physics and the long standing design limitations of the human eyeball.

The most "natural" and white looking light will be 4300K, with 5000K a bit more stark.  Higher degrees Kelvin than this you are shining a light darkly.

You haven't mentioned whether you have an aftermarket kit or factory fit HID's.  They use a totally different  styles of bulb base.

Aftermarket likely being a cheaper option.  A decent, complete kit can be had for £25.

Some of the top branded Phillips d1s to d3s are £80+ each bulb.

There are, presumably Chinese, no brand ones for £30.

I have aftermarket 4300K from Londoncolour via ebay.  They throw a generous swathe of light for me to drive along.

As above - really need to know if they are factory fitted or aftermarket to be able to offer upgrade advice.

The only thing to also bear in mind is the condition of the reflector bowl at the back of the projector. Yours is coming up to 10 years old and they do loose there reflective surface with time and heat.

I'm guessing they're after market as the ballast packs are visible and don't look factory fit. There's not really a blue colour to the light they just don't seem to project them self that far, when driving I find I have to concentrate very hard on either the cats eyes or the edge of the road

Is the beam itself aimed very low?

No I've adjusted it, parked opposite a wall and made sure it went the right way

Before buying anything new I would get the lights out and check the bulbs are seated properly.

Do you have headlight washers?

If not...They are aftermarket

Unfortunately that gives nothing away as the elegance comes standard with headlamp washers even without xenons.

Oh..Cheers Phil....LOL

Hehe. You're welcome :D

Could the question be "Do you have Manual Headlight adjustment, if you do they are aftermarket"?

Yes..very true

Yep it's manual height adjustment, does anyone know of any good quality hid bulbs at a reasonable price?

Thanks for finding those bulbs, there's 3 different colour temperatures to choose from and to be honest I haven't got a clue what the difference will be with each bulb

The higher the colour temperature the bluer the light. The lower temperature bulbs seem brighter as you have more useable spectrum of light and  to the human eye as were not too sensitive to seeing blue. The Londoncolour guy sells 4300k on ebay most reccomened these as being best and a bargain at 9.49 for two.

I would also check your bulbs are in the right way with the electrode wire facing down. When mine were in upside down the electrode wire cut out a big dark area in the middle of the beam.

Thank you for all the helpful replies, I will have a proper good look at the bulbs when I'm off work and have plenty of daylight. If it's not the way the bulbs are seated then I will order some new bulbs
