Cat back vs straight pipe

Featured Replies

Hi guys! I could do with a few opinions!

I'm heading for a new exhaust system, I currently only have a back box and tip. I'm after more sound, more of a grumble. A few friends said about getting a custom cat back, or a straight through pipe. I'm not after performance gains as its only a 1.2 tsi monte, there would be no gains. Just after a better sound! Maybe a sports cat too? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Sports cat will make very little difference to sound. Best gettin a diffrent back box as a straight pipe will sound far too loud and far too ****...most custom places will be able to make something up to what you want without too much problem

so maybe remove the rear silencer and have a pipe from the cat to the back box?

Ive removed my centre silencer and have a straight pipe to a universal backbone until i find something else to put on the back. sounds alright for what it is!

Ah, the Judge Dredd made an appearance...

Reecefabia10- back box would have the most effect on your sound track. You can also remove the resonator for those gear shifts "farts" people like :)

That might be how you talk in your neck of the woods.

But on Briskoda we are all refined car enthusiasts that meerly use Halfords for buying tools and cleaning products.....

Yes!! The farts on gear change is what I'm after! I thought that was more of a dsg thing?

Well, yes, ECU on gear change tries to match revs as best as it is able so you may say it is due to DSG changing gears so quickly.

Just remove the resonator (resonator delete mod, plenty of info about it here) and you are sorted:)

I thought a resonated delete is a mot fail? A gear change fart would be worth I though :P

A Catalytic Converter removed on your Euro 5 Emission petrol car 'will' or should be a MOT fail if spotted,

or the car can not meet its Emissions test at the MOT.

You can remove Resonators & Silencers at present as long as the MOT Examiner is happy that the car is not too noisy.

(in the future that might change, now that the Noise made by the Standard car is on the V5.)

Ooh I see! I always thought the resonator was the middle silencer but that's because I'm stupid :')

The Resonator might be the first Silencer box, It can be a Middle Box, different cars, different things,

but it is not the Catalytic converter.

What would you suggest I do with the cat? Would a sports cat improve sound or is it simply performance

I would suggest you drive and enjoy your car, and keep the warranty valid.

If you want to Void your warranty and have more go, then get it remapped.

No the Cat should not be changed on a 1.2 TSI, it is what it is really.

As i tried to say, The Cat needs left well alone really, and then you can change the Exhaust a bit for a better noise,

as long as it does not annoy the MOT tester or a Police Officer.

Changing the standard cat to a sport one would require a remap. Catalytic converter to work needs Oxygen and CO2 for the chemical catalytic reactions to happen efficiently. To do that ECU constantly oscillates the amount of fuel injected to create both a little lean and little rich burning conditions. Change cat and all the maps will no longer be optimised. It will work and I am pretty sure it will pass MOT no probs but the aim with those kind of mods is to extract performance.

This is not your goal apparently, and nothing wrong with that at all!

I do not know how the 1.2TSI's exhaust looks like (I am sure plenty of photos around :) ) but in vRS the "box" or larger diameter pipe located between the cat and the back box is the resonator removing of which improves the sound track and gives gear change "parps". Back box is where you get the tone and the volume from.

When McLaren were developing their road supercars they employed a professional car acoustician who spent a year designing the exhaust to make sure it sounded just perfect :)

worth watching the whole thing but "Ze Zorst" part starts at 39mins, enjoy!
