Modifications declared on insurance

Featured Replies

This has probably popped up before but what is the best insurance company for a 17 year old with 0 NCB and has held a license for 1 month? The car is a 2004 Fabia 1.2 HTP.

I want to declare my coilovers and wheels as well for legal reasons because the police in Northern Ireland hate 'R' drivers even more lol

P.s. Should have mentioned quotes are coming in at £2800 give or take.

I went with sky insurance when my Fabia was modified cost me £800 (was 23, 1 claim against me and 2 years no claims) Admiral/elephant don't mind a few subtle mods. On my previous cars before the Fabia it was very expensive with mods declared...

Try all the comparison sites etc and get a good base price, GoCompare seems to give the best range of quotes from companies that will cover Northern Ireland in the first place. Then call them up. Axa NI are very competative and can drop real money off their quotes on the phone or in a local branch. http://www.axani.co.uk/ also might be worth looking at the likes of on the bottom of their home page 'Drive Safe' an app you install and it rates your drving for an additional discount. Other companies can provide discounts for telematics and dash cams etc fitted. Local brokers are worth a try, you'd be surprised how much cheaper some can be over the bigger UK wide ones.

Point to note, I paid more than your getting quoted about 13 years ago in NI for a 1.1 Fiesta worth £250 unmodified 3rd party F&T, at same time if I lived hadn't moved back fro England I would have been paying £890. £2800 based on age and car does seem to be the sort of figure you are going to have to work with unless you haggle.

When getting quotes, the estimated annual mileage can make a difference. Obviously don't intentionally underestimate it, but make sure you don't say 12000 miles when you may only do 4000 etc.

The most popular route to first years of insurance in NI still seems to be with adding parents etc to policy to help reduce premium. Hughes Direct specifically told me they advise customers to add their parents to reduce price even after I told them they would never in a million years be anywhere near my car...... They were over double the price for me this year even after calling me and trying to reduce price, but they all look differently on different types of drivers. http://www.hughesinsurance.co.uk/

I would also be getting quotes for the car as stock spec to see if there is a big difference, might be worth putting it back to stock for first year to get over the initial hump.

Also if your not already on RMS, get on there and you should be able to get more local specific advice on which companies are the cheapest for younger drivers that are modification friendly and actually cover NI.

Cheers Fubar! That price was with both parents added to the policy and everything I could possibly to to make it cheaper. Amazing how much of a difference the non HTP was to insure, 600 worth of difference! But if rather pay the extra for the mods as I hope to get rid of The fabia in my second year of driving and insure something with a little more power. Mods are my top of priorities as my car is just going to be used for cruising around etc and enjoying myself. Thanks for the advice!

Some more smaller local places to try that I know a lot of younger drivers have used over the years.

If by any chance one of your parents insurance is up soon for renewal, places like these can be excellent when your looking at more than one policy also. Then there are multi car policies etc.

There is one in Coleraine I have heard mentioned by folk in the past too, but cannot think of the name. RMS would be worth a search though to see who went where locally in the same boat.

Try Chris Knott insurance as well, can't hurt to give them a go as they're sponsors to Briskoda they may offer a better price.

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

Give Chris Knott a ring on the Briskoda number, can be found on the relevant part of the forum. They are my current insurers, and basically offered to undercut the cheapest quote I found anywhere else, though they happened to be the cheapest quote I found anyway, as I declared the suspension mods on my Octy - everyone else wanted silly money for it.
