Spare wheel

Featured Replies

Hi

I am going to be driving to Geneva a few times during the next couple of years and am a little worried about only having a can of shaving foam if I get a puncture. What should I expect to pay for a space saver, tools and insert bits it all fits into in the tyre well?

Anywhere from £100 to £200 from a main dealer - always worth keeping an eye on eBay as complete sets (wheel plus tools plus foam tools insert) regularly come up, and bargains can be had.

Thanks Guys

My dealer wanted around £145 i seem to remember and that was with a little extra discount for mentioning Briskoda. I bought mine second hand including the insert and toolkit from ebay for £55 plus the cost of fuel for the trip from Sheffield to Bedford area and return... Which came to about £35-40 so a total of £90-95. The wheel had only been used once for around 15-20 miles which could be seen by the very slight use on the tyre tread so i was happy with a saving of nearly £50 over a brand new one.

Plus when i sell the car i can always sell the wheel again myself to get most of the cost back again.

I would advise setting up a search on ebay so that it tells you when new items are listed and just keep looking till the right one comes along. ;)

I paid £ 85 two years ago for the whole kit from a dealer; how can it have gone up that much?

The only thing you might want to check is will a full size spare fit in the wheel well as the ones mentioned above are effectively a space saver on your model as it's a 205 size tyre. Unless someone on here has done it take one off and try it in the wheel well, it might just be a bit too wide and sit too high.

I have a Superb Greenline so the 16 inch 205 size is standard for me so no speed limitation. I think I got the spare wheel plus jack, wrench etc for about £100 total from my dealer.

There are no space savers for the Superb, they get a standard full size 16" steel wheel.

The 16" spare will be marked as a space saver if your normal wheels are 17 or 18s.

Just buy the tool kit, and use one of your summer wheels (if you're driving on winter wheels now) as a spare. This saves you the cost of a spare wheel, and your spare wheel gets inflated at least ones a year.

There are no space savers for the Superb, they get a standard full size 16" steel wheel.

As psycholist says above, the 16 inch wheel with 205 tyre is only standard on the Superb Greenline, for all other 17/18 inch wheel variants when used it is speed limited, like a space saver would be, hence my comment.

That is, at least for many countries in continental Europe, not true. Only the Elegance has/had 17" as standard. All the lower versions had 16" as standard. And 18" was only standard for the L&K..

Yes, not enough space for a full sized 18" in the well as the floor won't lie flat. So it looks like it is the 16" (space saver) option for me. My car is the 2008 model so not sure if there is a difference between some of the ones I have seen as they are for a 2010 model.

I think I will make enquiries at the dealer and get the part numbers so I can make sure I end up with the correct part if I buy online.

Wonder if they changed the spare wheel space at some point as i know two people (10 plate and 11 plate Twindoors) who have standard 18" Thermisto alloys as spares. I just have the 16" standard spare in mine which as i mentioned earlier i got off eBay.

I was referring to UK spec cars only. I have a 2013 Greenline Elegance FL which in the UK has 16 inch wheels as standard fitment.

When I purchased my Superb Elegance on a 59 plate in November 2009, I ordered a spare wheel. I was supplied with a 16" steel wheel. It seems to me that it would be impossible to get a wider wheel in the spare wheel bay without displacing the the boot shelf.

Some cars have a ring of foam attached to the underside of the boot floor that aligns with the tyre well, which looks to be just thick enough that if it's removed there's space for a 225 instead of a 205 tyre. Mine has this, but my spare is a 205 R16.

Agreed, it was your use of the word space saver that threw me as it isn't a technically a space saver.

If the Superb Greenline gets a spare wheel as standard then it is the only Skoda that does, all other model Greenlines get the can of tyre foam and a compressor. A spare wheel isn't even normally an option.

All Superb's get the same steel spare wheel and tyre, regardless of the original alloy wheels fitted from the factory.

As you say the Greenline gets 16" alloys as standard for efficiency reasons (the same reason a spare isn't an option, the extra weight increases fuel consumption and emissions).

The only reason the full sized spare has a reduced speed sticker on it is for cars with larger sized alloys. It is a bit overkill though as the rolling radius will be all but identical to the original larger alloy due to the higher profile tyre.
