Pd130 diy changing compressor wheel info

Featured Replies

Hi all, right I've got 2 blown turbos. One (Garrett) with blown seals but the compressor wheel is fine. The other is a kkk turbo but the compressor wheel is all chewed up but seals are fine.

What I'm wondering is can I change the compressor wheels on the turbos to make 1 good one?

Thanks,

I'd very much doubt that you can make a hybrid using a mixture of KKK and Garrett wheels and shafts, but from what you say the Garrett is rebuildable once you source new seals. That's maybe not what you wanted to hear, but at least it suggests a road forwards.

Yeah the Garrett is repairable, is it a diy job replacing the seals? Don't see why any balancing ect would need to be involved when only replacing the seals.

If you feel competent to try something like building your own hybrid, I'd say you should be comfortable with strip, clean and rebuild.

This is something on my list to do sometime., building my own hybrid. You will need to have it sent off for balancing. Also consider if the compressor housing needs any work for wheel clearance.

Think you've misunderstood what I'm asking Tbf. I don't want to make a hybrid, I wanted to put the same spec compressor wheel from 1 turbo to the other. Not bigger parts ect.

Tbf I've taken scrap turbos apart before and there's not really a lot to it but I've never taken one apart then put it back together. What's the reason for needing a balance? If I'm only replacing the seals, that's what I'm confused about.

you can't use Garrett comp wheel on KKK turbo it won't fit. To replace oil seals you have to take the turbo apart and put it back together which means the compressor wheel and the locking nut will not be in the same position any more meaning the rotating assembly will be out of balance...
