I have a 1.4 16v and I have been happy with it so far, though I am considering a remap in the near future just to give it a little more power. The 1.4 is quite a low revving unit and does run out of steam at anything above 4300 revs although technically the max power is delivered at around 5000rpm [ supposedly... I think ] I did an  85 mile round trip this morning doing between 50 to 60mph with one adult passenger and a full load, and I averaged 44mpg.The 1.6 engine is a much livelier unit but I would imagine there is a trade off with fuel economy, especially if you do more town driving than open road motoring.

I've read a few comments on here from people saying its a noisy engine,I haven't found this to be the case, you do have to work it through the gears to get the best out of it though with such a light clutch action and smooth gearbox ,I find that a pleasure rather than a chore.

If you are looking for one second-hand I would advise looking for one without the roof rails [if you like a quiet life ..lol ] and tyre choice is important as I find the Continentals I have fitted on the standard alloy wheels do kick up a lot of road noise through the arches on anything less than a perfect road.

Overall I've got to say having owned classic sports cars,Saabs, citroens, even an Alfa or two this is one of my favourite cars ever, its remarkably sure footed,I happen to love the quirky looks, and the versatility of its load carrying ability is unmatched. You could do a lot worse than the 1.4 engine,I found the 1.6 an elusive beasty to track down with a low mileage, and the 1.9 even more scarce on the ground. Its horses for courses really,i used to drive a 1.0 yaris vvti so I find the 1.4 Roomster engine perfectly adequate.

Assuming this engine is NA I doubt that a remap will give any significant gains TBH.

The best 'bang for buck' as far as remapping goes, is with forced induction engines.

A friend had one done on his 1.4 and got an extra 8 to 9 bhp [ with a change of airfilter too],that might not sound like a lot but one thing I noticed when I got a chance to drive it was that it did seem to be breathing noticeably better.

ABT tuned the 1.4 AUB from 100bhp to 140bhp on the standard exhaust & airbox..........................& they make 160BHP with a bit more work.......even the bored out 1.6lt VWR tuned to circa 215-230bhp without turbos .....................
