Changing door handles

Featured Replies

Hi people,

I have got hold of some colour coded door handles but I am having real difficulty fitting them!

I have changed them before on other vag cars and it's quite a quick job, undo the t20 screw remove the small part, remove the Bowden cable and the swing the large bit back and remove.

Now the refit should be the reverse but the part on the large bit that the Bowden cable goes into goes behind a catch I assume this is to pull it in but I can't get it to lock behind that catch if anyone understands me?!

I can move the catch with my finger but there's not enough room to lock the handle behind it I can get pics if needed just can't see what I'm doing wrong.

I just took off the other small part of the handle on the other rear door and you can clearly see that it has to go behind that catch.

Any help or advice would be great just come in as my fingers were about falling off in the cold!! :(

It's a while since I did mine, but was pretty easy.

You did hold the handle in the open position when you slackened the torx screw?

I remember removing my old ones off the pivot point was hard without breaking the handle, have you put some grease on the pivot point on new handles?

I have re-fitted the handle now I manged to pull the spring clip and hook the handle back behind it there was some real tension on the clip but did it in the end.

The handle is now working but when I tightened up the t20 torx the handle didn't spring back like the other 3 doors did there seems to be no tension on the spring clip anymore and it felt like the torx screw was doing nothing when I was tightening it up?

The handle is sitting flush but it is loose and with the door closed I can remove the small part by just pulling it out which obviously shouldn't happen, any ideas what it could be?

I did use the above guide and 3 doors are fine it's just the drivers rear that has this problem?

As there is no tension at all on the spring clip anymore I think this might be the problem, so looks like I need to replace it with one of these

Anyone changed one of these before? And do you think this will solve the problem?

Thanks

has the cable fallen out of the locator? when i was replacing a broken cable I didn't put the cable in the locator and the handle wouldn't open the door, easily noticable when the door panel is off, not so much when its on!

oh and when undoin the torx doodahs, is it best to hold the handle open? (maybe i missed it on the guide? - hey im tired)
