Does my engine sound right?

Featured Replies

Apologies for another thread, just getting myself all paranoid...

Can you check out these two videos and tell me if my engine sounds normal, both running and on start up?

I'm concerned that it's very noisey and 'tappy'.  I know the TSI engines are tappy anyway, but does mine really sound normal? And please don't tell me that's a tensioner rattle I can hear...

Mine also ticks like yours. I believe that it is the evap valve? Maybe others will confirm.

On my laptop that sounds like diesel with huge boost leak :D

yeah mine really does sound like a diesel, both in and out of the car, which is why I'm getting paranoid ha

Mine always sounded tappy from when I bought it and right up to the day it lunched itself - not sure that helps?

Certainly the injectors are noisy and the turbo wastegate is noisy at 1800-2500 rpm.

If your engine was manufactured prior to mid-2011 then I would suggest you get it checked both for the timing chain tensioner and the camshaft bridge but maybe that is alarmist. Mine ate its camshaft due to the defect in the camshaft bridge of that period of manufacture and there are plenty here talking about the defective tensioner although that would only be noisy at start-up unless it had completely failed.

Mine had the tensioner failure at 48k miles, prior to when I purchased it.  All was fixed at the cost of £1500.

What does the turbo wastegate sound like?  Mine makes all sorts of sounds I'm not used to from a petrol engine, but then I don't know enough to know if it's right or not for this engine.

My car sounds identical so hope it's normal! Mine is a 10 plate on 18k miles.

59 plate TSI FL with almost 61k here. As said, tensioner replaced with uprated part at 48k miles.  Really temped to pay to have it replaced again in ~10k miles for peace of mind...

Why are VAG incapable of designer a reliable camchain drive and tensioner, seems all their engines are weak and VAG know it. They also refuse to address complaints under warranty. No wonder marques like kia are gaining ground.

The wastegate chatters quite loudly. It is a sharp tinny noise but low frequency and can be clearly heard inside the cabin but it only happens under load so you wouldn't hear it with the bonnet open under normal conditions.

There is a fix for it on a Techincal Services Bulletin involving a spring clip affixed to the activator arm.
