Do all Petrol TSI's smoke a lot when cold?

Featured Replies

Got the 1.4 TSI only 4 years old and 50,000mls.

Got no problems and not worried as Its not using oil or water but it smokes worse than any other motor I have ever had.

Seems to take forever to reach a point where the exhaust stops chucking out white smoke. Is this normal on these cars?

I would hope it's water vapour from where condensation has formed in the exhaust when it's cold.

Yes, it takes a while some days.

My VRS 'steams' when it is cold, or more precisely when the outside air is cold.  It is definitely not smoke and does it until it is up to temperature.  There have been a number of posts on the forum on this subject in the past.

You will be able to tell whether yours is actually producing smoke by the way it dissipates into the air and most of all the smell.

Quite surprising how much steam comes out the back of a VRS when the weather is right.

@Aspman

Haha yeah, especially when the head gasket let's go!

Just joking maverick54 ;-)

guess that's why petrol exhausts don't last as long as diesel---can't remember ever seeing water dribbling from diesel exhausts

Yes its steam ther's no smell and yes quite a bit of water dribbles out.

Bought it in November so hopefully when the better weather arrives it wont be as bad. Must hold a couple of pints of condensation in the exhaust this weather.

My Yeti shows a bit of steam on cold mornings, all petrols do. In comparison the Crossflow in my Mk1 Escort has the local clergy all excited thinking that a new Pope is being elected! Modern motors heat up faster.

Very true apparently. Mechanic told me just that, petrol exausts rot from the inside out for that reason. Hot water, oxygen and acids are not a good mix for mild steel.
