Tesioner nut came loose why

Featured Replies

As earlier post my tensioner came loose causing belt to jump. The 2.0l 16v pd engine has a stud with a small 10mm? nut which is loose. The stud itself seems secure in the head.My local garage says it's a common fault and is reluctant to do a repair as he can't guarantee the repair won,t fail. On the internet it mensions a strech bolt that MUST be renewed and NOW it's included in the kit where previously it was not. what is the way forward for a reliable repair? The car has covered 160,000miles the first belt change at 90,000. Help please

Would fitting a new stud/nut when repaired solve the problem?

When the tensioner was last changed, the stretch bolt should have been renewed. If the original bolt was reused then its a big problem because it could work loose enough over time. A properly installed tensioner with new stretch bolt should be fine.

Doesn't anybody use thread lock these days!

I think the Gates kit comes with two studs and a bolt,as per thread lock I agree but won't applying tread lock affect the torque setting, also if there is room how about another lock nut.
