Octavia VRS TSI MK3 - 150k miles possible?

Featured Replies

So my lovely VRS TSI DSG Hatch is over a year and a bit old and has 28k miles on the clock.

The car has been faultless and for the first time in a long time, I'm considering keeping a car for 5 years, the car is that good!

I do roughly 25k miles a year so my question is, will this car handle the mileage ok over 5 years which would put it on 125K miles plus?

I will always service the car via Skoda and use genuine parts so I kind of think my octavia would be fine handling the mileage long term.

Would welcome thoughts on this,...

I hear some of the mk2 Octavias have handled a lot more mileage with ease,...

There must be plenty of mkii taxi octy at several times that distance.  Service the car mechanically, including suspension parts, and I'd hope it would be fine. It would be interesting to see what your remap does long term.... But if you don't push it hard non stop, and keep that oil changed regularly id hope the engine would be fine.  The one thing I'd worry about is the dsg though.... I'm sure they are better than they were, but....

Our work Scouts get hammered 24/7 and my 13 plate is 120k. She is sweet as a nut and I swear the DSG is better than ever. They have a service when due but nothing else. Out of a large fleet I've only heard of two gear box swaps. They are of course mkii Scouts but my MY 15 feels even better quality so I've no concerns the mkiii will be any different. Hope this puts a different angle on it for you mate.

To be honest, I don't use the power all the time, when I drive in work mode, I'm driving to achieve best mpg as I can often earn from the distance I do through the mileage claim. Don't get me wrong, I do have a lot of fun too!

As for the DSG, I've had 4 VW Group cars, 2 x MK5 GTI's, 1 x R36 - all with DSG's and all had new mechatronics within 20k miles!! The VRS on the other hand is now on 28k miles and seems smoother than ever since the map so fingers and toes crossed!!

Thanks for that, gives me some confidence that the car will handle the mileage, especially knowing how the emergency vehicles cope  :D  :D

To be fair, most cars I've had and done a good years mileage in have felt better than the ones I've just used at the weekends so doing the mileage and driving the car, rather than pottering about, seems to stand them in good stead  :D  :D

Ate you doing variable or interval servicing? Of you are servicing it every 10k mile, I can't see why it won't last. If you leave it long term like variable does, then you may have issues. But any car with service intervals that long and turbo will likely have issues.

Can't help with mileages quite that high, but if it helps, I ran my Mk1 petrol vRS to 79k miles and my Mk2 petrol vRS to 88k miles, and both were fine when I sold them. A few parts replaced through wear and tear but nothing major. And both were purchased as ex-demo models, so may not have had the most caring of first few thousand miles, but didn't seem to be affected by that.

Service it regularly and it will probably go on to 200k+ miles with few dramas, though cars are cars so you cant rule the odd thing happening out. Given its tuned as it is I suppose you have to anticipate some components (clutch, cat, turbo) failing before they probably would do on a standard car due to the extra strain on them.

If it were my car Id probably resort to 10k fixed servicing instead of long life as its now pretty high stress and variable intervals probably wont suit it v well now.

Worried about 150,000 on a modern car?! Jesus my old (1999) Alfa 156 (petrol) managed 240,000 miles and the standard of build on that was nothing compared to my Octavia.

Service it when it's due and it will go on and on. As said above, there are plenty of Octy taxis around with thousands on them - 290,000 miles on the mark 2 I got in just before I purchased mine and was asking him about reliability. Granted they are diesels but there is no way 150,000 will be a problem on a petrol.

Cheers for the reply guys - I think it's fair to say I should be ok with 150k miles, after all if a 1.8 Volvo can achieve 2million miles  :D  :D  :D

I'm sure it will hit those miles fine, its possible it may need a turbo by then but they look pretty accessible and easy to change

Any modern car should easily be capable of 200k mi. That's no guarantee, of course. There are always flukes. I had a v6 Camry that blew its engine at 88k. But with maintenance you should make it.

If Trigger's broom can last 20 years (with only 17 new heads and 14 new handles)...

Any car will last forever if you are prepared to replace components once they are worn out, or in the case of servicing, carry out preventative maintenance. Whilst 150k miles is easily achievable, the question should be is it cost effective to do so?
