Name that Turbo problem!

Featured Replies

Dear all, just stripped the turbo off my car (kkk off a blt) and come across this.

Obviously been like it for some time (i suspect underlying issue since it was fitted), but what could cause something like this?

There is absolutely no play in the shaft what so ever. Also this related to my thread sometime ago around data logging and turbo whizzing sounds.

Data logging showed it was boosting as to be expected really.

My guess would be maybe a poorly serviced aftermarket air filter or a paper filter that is somehow letting dirt in.

Yes I did think that. I had a K&N typhoon fitted for a while but the noise the turbo was making was present long before I fitted that. Any other ideas? Turbo seems really sturdy other than obviously being fooked lol

One of mine got chipped like this and the company that repaired it found a lump of carbon in the turbo, possibly from the sludge that gets gathered on the intake manifold.

Your turbo would run fine but the inbalance caused by the chips would eventually lead to more damage, im guessing you were getting the 'siren' noise.

Yes that correct although it was more of a whizzing noise to be fair when on boost.

I'm going with a bad air filter / Intake system as well.

It's possible to much oil in the engine also, getting sucked from the ccb.

I was running a catch can for a while. Might have to elephant mod it just as a precaution. The turbo isn't oily at all though?

Does the catch can go back onto the intake pipe?

It did do mate yes, I just have the standard breather pipe on now though.

Will probably strip this tomorrow and see what state the innards are in.

That's impeller erosion from badly filtered air, nothing else can cause it.

What's strange is, the car has made the same noise, which appears to have been caused by this issue as it has now gone, since it was fitted (recon turbo from a warranty company). Noise did get worse though after shark had it for remapping. I ran the standard airbox since I had the car but got sick of the whizzing noise the turbo made so stuck a k&n typhoon on to drown out the noise.
