Any oil to vw504 spec. will support both variable and fixed interval services.

On a fixed interval regime, if you change every 10,000 miles/1 year then vw502.00 spec oil is sufficient though I'd make sure it was a fully synthetic oil.

Personally as soon as our cars are out of warranty, I do my own oil/filter changes using GM Dexos 2 oil Which is 502.00/505.01 spec plus meets all the latest BMW and Mercedes long life specs because I can get it for £15/5 litres from my local Vauxhall dealer if I buy 4 cans, asking for trade price. Mann filters because they are OE and much cheaper from GSF (much closer too) than the dealer for what is exactly the same filter. And I now change at 9300 miles (15k km) absolute max or 1 year after many years of running cars to over 12000+ miles between oil changes after losing faith in some of the latest engines (due to 1.2 tsi cam chain issues on our variable service interval car running 17500 miles/11month) but that has more to do with a perceived lack of faith in the variable service interval regime.

If any car does mainly short/cold runs and low mileage I'll lower my limit considerably based on inspection of the dipstick oil wiped on a good quality paper towel and examining it after 5 mins , also nose test to smell for petrol dilution or other nasty smells. Could be as little as every 6 months. Not highly scientific, but playing safe.

Diesels can run oil much longer than petrols in my opinion.
