Monte Carlo 1.6 TDI 105bhp Judder

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I've had my Monte 3 years now & covered over 60k in it, it's been a brilliant car but I will be changing it shortly, however when I'm in 5th gear and travel between 45-65mph I've always noticed a bit of judder, recently it appears to have got worse, has anyone else experienced this?

I will be selling it on to my brother in law so want to make sure it's right before it goes!

Any advice great fully received!

Regards

Callum

Hi Callum, the issue could be several things but the first thing to ask is, have you ever used an fuel system/injector cleaner in your car? If not, that may be all that is needed. Modern diesels do need injectors and fuel system to be very clean. It should be used regularly at least once a year to keep everything clean. Do not rely on the fuel cleaners in the fuel itself, especially if it's supermarket diesel you are using. At 60k your injectors will normally be getting a bit cruddy if you haven't use a cleaner. My advice is to simply use some dpf friendly Millers diesel injector cleaner and dose it to the recommended levels. It can make a huge difference, although if you haven't used it before don't be surprised if the engine runs slightly lumpily for a few days as it cleans out the carbon and muck and cleans the injector tips. It works and the engine will settle down nicely with more power and smoother operation. As techs, we used it all the time in the workshop, especially on higher mileage cars such as yours when someone complains of rough running with judder. Of course, as I mentioned earlier, it can be other things but try this first and come back if no improvement after a week of running around with the cleaner in.  Good luck!

PS. 45mph is a bit slow for 5th gear even if the dash light is telling you to change up at that point. It's not good for the egr and some other engine components. I'd leave it until 50mph...the gearing is very tall on these and the motors like to rev much more these days with their shorter stroke engines.

Thanks for the advice, every other tank full I do treat it to V-Power or Supreme etc but generally I do use Supermarket fuel as it's the closest to me.

I used to use Millers in my MK1 Fabia VRS back in the day so I'll give that a try too, I did think that the other day.

I live inbetween Bristol and Glos and to get to either there is a long road which is 50/60mph limit, generally you get stuck behind vehicles travelling slower and it's always had a slight judder at those speeds, but as explained it seems a lot more noticable now, especially when the car is well up to temperature, I did wonder if it's the EGR clogging up or something, just don't want to sell it to my bro in law then it goes wrong as has been faultless to date!

Will give that a go and keep you posted.
