Fan stays on

Featured Replies

Wife just asked if the engine fan is supposed to stay on after a 20min drive down motorway when parked? Yeti 140

Bhp model.

Thanks in advance

It sounds like it was doing a DPF regeneration, that's what happens if engine is stopped whilst it's doing it or just after as it puts more fuel in to heat up and burn off the particles in the DPF.

If it runs for a while it's perfectly normal.

Yep... it'll happen every now and again.

It'll only do it when it's ready but a good longish run should extend the time till it tries again.

Appeox every 600 miles or when the unburned soot in the dpf has reached a certain level. It will probably complete the cycle the next time the engine is up to temperature. Tell tale sign is the revs increase to around 1000 rpm while its doing one. Northing to worry about at all. If you ever get the orange dpf light come on it means you've failed a number of times in a row to complete a regen and you then need to drive it until the light goes out.

Not really necessary unless your usage is below about 20 miles/trip. Just drive it and let it take care of itself. Today's  cars are usually smarter than their drivers. :giggle:

The fan running on is also often accompanied by a "hot" smell, both normal.
