Removing hardened screws.

Featured Replies

A nice day outside, so after adjusting the Octavias' gearchange to 'acceptable' I set to on the LT with a cutting disc.

Off with the rear light cluster lens, 1, 2, 3 screws out. then the ones holding the bulb unit to the body, 1, 2, 3, 4fxsake.

The last one will not budge and is corroded to the point of the cross being a shallow recess. I thought about cutting it between the body and the back of the bulb unit, but the screws are recessed below the perimeter. Drilling from the outside has not done much, and then I remembered they are probably hardened.

?Any good ideas gents?

I can get access to the inside but it is severely limited.

If you can't cut a notch in and tap it out I'd likely drill if out too, then get some mole grips on what's left after the unit is removed.

Not sure if there are some well 'ard drill bits you could use?

It is a little lug at most 10mmx10mm with a 5dia hole in.

Anyway it is out. I used a masonry drill which seemed to be doing the job, in that I could see swarf. What appears to have happened is that the screw started turning and pulled through the plastic. It should have had nuts on the end of  and captive bolts in the bulb housing.

I ended up cutting the whole corner out anyway to get access to the inner floor, access to the inside not a problem now. :D

Glad you got it out - I hate jobs like that.
