buying a mk2 vrs

Featured Replies

Morning all, looking at buying a mk2 vrs pre fl, is there anything to look out for? Most I've seen seem to have miles above 100k; do I steer clear or is the engine good for double that and more? Have about £4k to spend.

Assuming petrol.

Rusty sills and maintenance record inc cambelt changes. At that price the car will be old enough to have needed 2.

Sawtooth tyres on the rear (droaning noise).

check oil many like a drink, not all. Bit of gunk under the cap is ok and normal in cold weather but not loads.

Some like to check the cam follower isn't worn but not sure how you'd check for that easily.

A well maintained petrol should go past 100k without too much bother.

Also check that the revs don't rise up and down when stationary. If they do it needs a new PCV. About £45

Should double 100K if maintained correctly.
