Still getting bearing type sound from car.

Featured Replies

Just had two brand new FAG wheel bearings fitted to the front of my car.  They are a week old if that.

But I`m still getting the same noise as before coming from my car, which I assumed was wheel bearing issues(the reason for replacing them!).  Its a deep wub wub wub sound and its really bugging me.  It gets slightly louder as you turn left but almost completely goes away when you turn right!

The sound started after fitting 18 inch alloys.  I keep trying to convince myself it might just be crappy tyres as the 18s were an ebay purchase and I've never heard of the tyre brand, but then I ask myself... would the sound of front tyres change as you turn right to left???  I thought it might also be one of the tyres rubbing somewhere, but i have had it lock to lock and put my hands all around the tyres and can`t find anywhere it could be touching the inside of the arch.

It's just bugging me now, especially after I thought it was front wheel bearings so had two new ones fitted! :(

Only thing I haven`t checked are the rears.  But I have looked this up and apparently if a rear bearing is going it is not affected by the position of the front wheels. The sound is generally always there at the same volume.

Saw toothing on the tyres (more common on the rears)? Have you tried swapping the wheels front to back? Is there any vibration through the steering? When was your tracking last done and have you made any suspension/steering changes since it was last done?

What tyres are they? Are they the same all round?

Lots of questions, but answers to those should help narrow the issue down.

Don't be too worried that you have replaced the bearings but the sound remains - the front bearings on mine went at about 100k so look at it as pre-emptive maintenance :)

Good things pointed out above, think I'd be exploring the tyres and saw toothing. Some tyres as tread wears have a step change. I would say that changing to 18s could be more than a coincidence. If tyres are ok I'd be checking alignment.

Yeh I've changed fronts to backs now.  Haven`t taken it for a run yet.  One pair are 'Sunny' and the other are 'Landsall'..?

Who? Hope it makes a difference mate.

I've got a similar noise on my TDi elegance. All standard wheels and tyres and fully maintained by Skoda (until now). I sometimes pick up a small vibration in the steering on light braking too.

The last owner has the front end suspension rebuilt by a Skoda dealer with new bushes etc because of vibrations while braking. The brake discs were changed under warranty last year from the year before but I don't know why. I'll be watching with interest and if I find out what's causing my problem I'll post it.

"The sound started after fitting 18 inch alloys" - do you still have your old wheels, if so, did you try putting them back on to see if the sound is till there?
