Wheel adaptors and spacers?

I've got some new wheels which come with adaptors to fit 5x100 and they are 20mm I've also got my old 5x100 hubcentric bolt through spacers with longer bolts which are also 20mm, I'm wondering if it's safe to put the spacer on top of the adaptor and bolt the wheel on with the longer bolts going through the spacer and into the adaptor as I want the wheels spaced out more and this would he cheaper than buying larger adaptors as I already have the spacers.
