My starter has died today.  Tried to turn the car over, nothing apart from some sort of electrical surge sound and then I could smell a burning smell coming from the starter!  I`m guessing its fried itself? 

 

What I want to know is what choice do I have with regards to replacement starter motors?  Are they interchangeable between the mk1 diesel and petrol cars for example?  Or does it have to be specific starter for the VRS?  Are they the same starters used on mk4 golfs etc?

yes is mostly interchangeble....1.9TDI ALH with 02j box will fit

But....I strongly recommend to repair the old one,you can buy any part cheap,and still have the original starter wich is the best quality.

New aftermarket starters are poor.

 

Mine was noisy like hell,and replaced a 2 euro bush and runs like new for 2 years.

You can buy the bendex bush,solenoid and coal plate under 40 euro and is like new

Replace all parts from both links and you have a new starter wich will last another 10 years at least.Will be cheap too
